Most IPTV users in Switzerland are running an Amazon Fire TV Stick. The reason is simple: the device costs between 35 and 60 francs, works on any HDMI TV, and you're up and running within ten minutes.
Which Firestick should you buy?
Standard HD streaming works on the regular Fire TV Stick. If you want 4K or multiple parallel streams in the household, get the Fire TV Stick 4K Max — Wi-Fi 6, double the RAM, noticeably snappier. The 25 franc premium is worth it.
The Fire TV Cube (the pricier set-top variant with Alexa hub) doesn't add anything meaningful for an IPTV-only setup. Your money is better spent on the Stick 4K Max.
Step 1: allow apps from unknown sources
By default, the Firestick refuses apps that don't come from Amazon's store. Since TiviMate — the best IPTV app on Firestick — isn't on that store, you have to unlock sideloading:
- On the Firestick: Settings → My Fire TV → About → Developer options.
- Toggle «Install unknown apps» on.
- Leave «ADB debugging» on too — harmless and occasionally useful.
Step 2: install Downloader
The Downloader app by AFTVnews is a simple utility that grabs apps from a URL. It's free and lives in the Amazon Store.
- On the Firestick search for «Downloader».
- Install and open it.
- When prompted, allow Downloader to install apps from unknown sources.
Step 3: grab TiviMate
TiviMate is by far the best IPTV app on Android-based TV devices. Polished UI, fast playback, proper EPG, catch-up support, clean layout. The free tier works for most users; the premium tier (around CHF 18 a year) adds multi-playlist support and channel recording.
In Downloader, enter the URL aftv.news/tivimate — the app downloads and installs.
Step 4: add your M3U URL
After buying an IPTV plan you'll receive an M3U URL by email. This is your personal access to the channel list. In TiviMate:
- Open the app → choose «Add Playlist».
- Pick «M3U Playlist».
- Paste the URL from your email (tip: open the email on your phone and use the Fire TV remote keyboard feature — much faster than the on-screen keyboard).
- Confirm. The channel list loads in 10 to 30 seconds.
Step 5: enable the EPG
The Electronic Programme Guide shows what's on, when. TiviMate enables it automatically if your M3U URL includes an EPG endpoint, which any reputable provider's URL will. If it's missing: Settings → EPG → add the URL provided by your service.
Step 6: test playback
A common beginner frustration: streaming stutters the first evening but works fine the next day. That's usually not the app's fault — Swiss ISP DNS caches take around six hours to «warm up» for new endpoints. If you have persistent buffering:
- Move the Firestick to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band rather than 2.4 GHz.
- In TiviMate, switch the playback engine from Auto to ExoPlayer.
- If Sky Sport or Canal+ buffers: briefly switch to a Swiss channel (SRF or RTS), wait 30 seconds, then switch back. That «wakes» the DNS cache.
Common beginner problems
«Playlist URL invalid»: you have a typo. Copy the URL straight from your confirmation email — no manual entry.
«No internet connection»: the Firestick has dropped Wi-Fi. Settings → Network → reconnect.
TiviMate is in English by default: Settings → Language → German or French. The translations are clean.
